Ethiopian Airline flight from the capital Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya crashes shortly after take off. A statement by the state run airliner says the Boeing 737 took off at 8:38am local time on Sunday and crashed shortly after at 8:44am.
There were 149 passengers and eight crew members on board the plane when it crashed. For now, there are very little additional reports about the crash including the location of the scene.
The Office of the country’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed in a tweet says “on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning”.
The last reported crash of an Ethiopian Airline was an international commercial flight scheduled from Beirut to Addis Ababa that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after takeoff from Rafic Hariri International Airport on January 25, 2010. All the 90 people on board perished in what was the first fatal crash for Ethiopian Airlines since the hijack of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 in 1996.
