Kebbi State First Lady, Dr. Zainab S. Bagudu has drawn attention to the Hippopotamus that has been spotted in Zaria Kalala village of Koko-Besse LGA following flooding in the State calling for action to be taken on climate change.
In a tweet, the Governor’s wife said “A majestic hippopotamus spotted in Zaria kalala, #Kebbi.Last week our farms were destroyed by flood. These events remind us #climatechange in this century is real.We must become more responsible and encourage neutrality
What are you doing to combat #ClimateCrisis?@sharon_ikeazor”
This is the second time this year that a Hippopotamus will be seen in Kebbi State. In February, the one seen in Samanaji town also in Koko Besse LGA was killed by the fishermen. It was said to have been wreaking havoc on farmlands in the area before it was trapped and killed. An action that drew wide condemnation from conservationists.
Koko-Besse and Tuga LGAs of Kebbi State are known to be home to some animals in the wild especially in places like Zaria Kalala, Samanaji and Tuga were elephants have also been seen in recent times.
The Kebbi State Government in October 2019 said it would establish a wildlife park between Tuga and Zaria Kalala. This has not been done but in calling for action to combat the climate crisis which affects Kebbi as one of the frontline states battling with desertification, the State First Lady mentioned the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken about the flooding in Kebbi State for the second time in 3 days. After his media aides issued a statement on his behalf on September 3, he took to Twitter on September 6 to again lament about the losses. He says “Kebbi State is the focal point of our policy to produce rice locally as part of the administration’s commitment to agricultural revival. I sympathize with the bereaved families & the farmers affected. We will work closely with the State Government to bring relief to all victims”.
