President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the use of four national stadiums as Coronavirus isolation centres if the need arises. This follows the rise in the number of infections across the country.
These are the National Stadium Surelere Lagos, Liberty Stadium Ibadan, Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja and the Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna. No mention was however made of the national stadiums in the South-East and South-South geo-political zones.
Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare who broke the news of the approval on his Twitter handle says the “The stadiums are huge complexes with many outdoor and indoor areas. Medical personnel and authorities will determine the appropriate areas of usage if and when necessary” He explains further that “Stadiums can be used as testing centres and because of space they will allow for required distancing”.
The Minister who says that the government is being proactive and apparently refering to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja says “The identification and fumigation of multiple buildings such as the multipurpose sports hall, Gyms etc located in the stadium will commence shortly”
Dare also disclosed that President Buhari has approved the use of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC orientation camps nationwide as additional isolation centres, if the need arises in the future.
The Federal Government had on Thursday raised alarm that the authorities are in search of 4,370 contacts of confirmed Coronavirus cases as potential carriers of the virus that have not been traced. Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who made this made said the concerned persons have go into self-isolation or reported themselves to be authorities.
