Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari will attend the swearing-in of the newly elected President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Muhktar Sissoco Embalo scheduled for February 2020.
The President made the commitment when he personally received an invitation from President-Elect Embalo to be the Guest of Honour at the presidential inauguration. Embalo, as seen in the photos, came with the invitation to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Embalo won the keenly contested elections on the second ballot conducted on December 29, 2019. MediaDimensions had reported on November 27, 2019, how the outgoing Guinea-Bissau President José Mário Vaz lost his re-election bid after failing to win enough votes to participate in the run-off polls.
President Buhari commended President Vaz for supporting the emergence of Embalo in the second round of balloting “in the interest of peace and stability”. He said history will remember President Mario Vaz for putting national interest above his own, emphasising that he cared for peace within the region.
The Nigerian President expressed his desire for both countries to work together for the betterment of their peoples and reiterated his vision for peace, progress and prosperity in West Africa.
President-elect Embalo, a businessman-turned-politician, was Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau between 2016 and 2018 under incumbent President Vaz. He was a member of the ruling African Party of Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) when he founded the Movement for Democratic Alternative (MADEM-G15) on which platform he won the presidential elections.
