THREE WEEKENDS OF POWER OUTAGE IN PARTS OF NIGERIAN CAPITAL

Hours after electricity supply was restored following 48 hours of nationwide power outage occasioned by workers strike and the collapse of the National Grid, some parts of Abuja, the nation’s capital will be without supply for three consecutive weekends.

A notice by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says the planned power outage is “for three weekends in order to minimise the period of interruption of power supply to its customers within the affected areas”. The outage will be from the hours of 9am to 6pm on Saturday December 14, Sunday December 15, Saturday December 21, Sunday December 22, Saturday December 28 and Sunday December 29, 2019.

The areas to be affected are the Central Business District, Zones 1 to 7 of Wuse District, Maitama District and some parts of Jabi District. In the statement signed by the AEDC General Manager, Corporate Communications, Oyebode Fadipe, the power interruption is “to enable the Abuja Region of the TCN Maintenance Team in conjunction with AEDC undertake the replacement of a punctured 132kV XLPE cable on the Katampe – Central Area 132kV Line 1”.
The cable to be replaced is situated behind the IBB Golf Course.

The distribution company is promising electricity consumers in the affected areas that “the decision to embark on the replacement of the cable is gratifying as it will engender improved service”. MediaDimensions gathered that the affected areas have for some time been experiencing loadshedding due to the faulty cable.
